Disclaimer: I am Mayank Bansal ( pagalguy id : @dc0bansal) and writing this article to help future IBPS aspirants and improvement seekers. This is a very long article and its just about the strategy that I followed during my preparation. So read at your own risk. You might end up wasting your 15 minutes. All views written here are my personal opinions and I do not take any responsibility if it hurts anyone's feelings or sentiments.
Ignorance is bliss & Reading this article will make you realise it's meaning. This is a narrative of the journey that I had since I walked into this world of Notifications, AdmitCards and Results. Its not a success story nor a motivational one but instead Its an effort to describe the hurdles and dilemmas that I had to face all along.
You might be wondering who am I ?
Well, I'm just like you a young adult struggling out his way into this hard hearted world. I'm one of those who's life can be summarised by this flick

After working in a 4 by 4 cubicle for 10 hours a day at Infosys for 2 years in a far off land from home, I realised its time to move on. A 25k pay check was unable to compensate for the life that it was draining out of me.
And Here I was :
With no prior knowledge about this field I started my journey. I was so naive at that time of filling IBPS form, I had filled Exim, ECGC and IDBI(pun intended) at 18th, 19th and 20th slots respectively. And though being from North, I have Corporation Bank at the 2nd position as I mistook it for Co-operative bank which are present in abundance in my area.
Here is a screenshot of the exams that i have given so far :
As of now my successful results are :
LIC ADO -- Written cleared
RRB OS1 -- Cleared .. Got SHGB
IBPS PO -- Attempted 119/200 -- Secured 118.25 -- Got PNB -- resigned.
IBPS Clerk -- Attempted 193/200 -- Secured 177 -- Got BOB -- TOPPED in Chandigarh
LIC AAO -- Attempted 115/120 -- Secured 270/300 and 319/360 -- cleared -- Joining ztc Bhopal this october.
IRDA JO -- Pre cleared with 110/160 cutoff -- Phase 2 was on 3rd April -- did not appeared.
But as I already said It's not a success story. These are just for the sake to make you realise that success doesn't come easily and the above two stats are a proof of that.
Now let us start with the real purpose I stared writing for.
I will write it in a form a questionnaire. I will write the question that I used to ask all along and will try to answer them in a manner my seniors, teachers and my big brother Google answered me but with my personal opinions, hence making it useless for everyone else.
Ques 1:
20 Lakh applications, 20 Thousand seats. How can I even think of clearing it ?
Simply by not thinking about it. Always think in terms of cut off. Here is excerpt from one my answer that I had written on Pagalguy
" Always think about cut off plus 25 .. Make that your goal.. So your attempt should be cut off plus 30 .. Make that your habit.. Never ever think about seats or competition .. Never think about negetive coz if ur having it, u lack practice.. Gk and comp are understandable and for that I kept a margin of 5 ques.. Have the right attitude.. Remember it's quantitative aptitude and not quants.. It's a test of your nerves.. ADAPT.. make english your strong zone.. 15 marks in comprehension.. 7 in cloze .. 4 in fill ups.. 2 in gram.. 2 in para.. That will make you stand apart from the crowd... Gk is no more the x factor.. How to prepare for English.. Read.. Read editorials everyday.. Comp, fillups, cloze, para.. All can be prepared just by reading.. It's not an intelligence test.. It's a test where you need to make an edge.. Make it happen.. I hope you get the jist."
Everyone knows that one needs to get 100+ in written exam and you are in. So does 100/200 sound similar to 20000/2000000. I hope not. lets carry on our discussion.
how to get 100+ in an exam like IBPS Po ? Simply by working smart. In the following questions I will try to answer how to cross this 100+ mark.
100+ marks are needed only for IBPS PO exam. For other exam's just look at their last year Cutoff's and target cutoff + 30 marks in written and change your strategy accordingly.
Ques 2
Is coaching necessary ?
Well I took one. And I will not say that it was totally futile. If you need one go for it but if you take it, take it for the right reasons.
Advantages
Ques 3
How to prepare Quantitative aptitude ?
First thing first. Its not an intelligence test. They are not here to test your mathematics skills. This exam is about time management. We are all graduates here which implies that we all have cleared class 10. Haven't we ? Now that's the level of Quants that is asked in IBPS Po.
I'm not from a Mathematics Background, How will I compete with this Engineering breed. Well If after reading the above para, you still have this question then trust me Quants is the least of your problem but the real concern is your attitude towards life and more specifically how you stand up to challenges that life throws on you.
That said, Our target should be to secure 22-25 marks in this section in rough time frame of 40 minutes.
With four DI's accounting for 20 questions our aim should be to get at max 13 questions right from there. If you aim for more, you'll start loosing the battle coz' DI's though look easy but they are really time consuming. Out of those 4 DI's, two will be like a piece of cake with very simple basic arithmetic involved. Secure you 10 marks there. Make it your goal. As far as the other two DI's are concerned, they are lengthy & calculative but still they contain atleast 3 questions which are just either a ratio calculation or a percentage increase or decrease. Find those 3/10 questions and solve them. The above process takes around 15 minutes at max and you are done with 13 marks of those 25.
Then comes the tricky part. We are remaining with 20 question of which 5 are equations, 5 are series, 1 probability, 1 time work, 1 boats streams, 2 P/L, 2 SI/CI, 1 Partnership, 1 Allegations and 1 ages.
Our aim should be to first find the inequalities and solve all of them within 7 minutes which gets us at 18 questions in 22 minutes. Then start with basic maths. Never leave probability. It is a little tricky to understand but gives us 1 mark in seconds. Time and work, allegation, age all these topics are 1.5 minutes game and here you're done with 4 questions in 6 minutes which makes us at 22 questions in 28 minutes.
Keeping an error margin of 7 minutes, you have 22 marks in 35 minutes with 5 minutes to solve at max 2 easy one's of those 5 series.
And in the last go for CI/SI, P/L and allegations, partnership etc if overall time allows time allows you to.
Always do a cost to benefit analysis for each question and if the cost is more than 2 minutes for a benefit of 1 marks, skip it..
Ques 4
How to prepare current affairs ?
Just 3 RULES & No rocket science.
Ques 5
How to prepare english ?
This is one section which keeps most of us awake before the exam night. There is one simple reason for that, we never prepare for it and even if we do, we never follow the right technique
Every coaching institute starts teaching english grammer on the name of preparation for English. That is the worst thing one can do considering IBPS Po pattern
Lets breakup the english section : 20 questions from comprehention, 5 para jumbles, 5 fill ups, 5 sentence correction and 5 cloze text.
Our aim 30/40 .. How to achieve it ? START READING Start reading editorials, financial news. Just start reading. Read anything and everything. How will that help ? Reading will improve your comprehensive abilities. It will improve your basic sentence formation. You will be able to make out what word should go with what and how to use that word in that specific context. Just be reading and practising it on a daily basis you can achieve :
15/20 in comprehension in just 18 minutes . TRUST ME AGAIN ON THIS
5/5 in fill ups in just 2 minutes
4/5 in cloze test in hardly 2 minutes
Atleast 1/5 in correction and
if you really do it diligently 5/5 in para jumbles or at least 2/5 in that.
That makes 25/40 or 29/40 in just 25 minutes.
Just leave the sentence correction part if you're not good in grammer. But as per my experience one can easily 2 questions in SC easily.
Ques 6
How to prepare reasoning ?
Ques 7
How to prepare computers ?
Ques 8
SSC or IBPS ?
Caution: I am a person who totally inclines towards IBPS. Be mature enough to read and absorb and do not start throwing away your opinion on me. I have bias and i'll be sharing reasons along. I'm hereby declaring that all view shared here are totally my personal opinions and i do not force anyone to accept them or reject. Everyone is different and have different priorities in life. Se be a wise person, take from all but do what your heart says.
That said here is yet another excerpt from one of my answers on pagalguy
"Well.. U want a peaceful life, slow growth, typical govt culture, tea 5 times a day, higher salary for a short run, or an illusion of power (yes I said illusion coz real power lies with seniors IAS/IRS officers) for an analogy it's like saying police is a powerful job hence traffic inspector has a lot of power, then go for cgl.. That said so why cgl is so popular ? First ratrace.. Most guys here are fresher with no work experience and with little or no idea of their life priorities. They think there's no workload in cgl, urban posting , more salary than po but what they really miss out is there's no work satisfaction and at the end of let's say 10 years when u look back at your life, you won't be having anything worth while even to convince yourself that u actually did something.. Almost everyone here will disagree to me but that's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion.. Prob with IT inspector, you are forced to take bribes coz there's a fixed %age amount that u have to give to ur superiors on a monthly basis .. Not that's pressure.. Coming to desk jobs in CS.. You go, you sit, you type , you have tea , you come.. Does it excites you ??? Bank has pressures, so be it ur in your 20's... Now why I chose banking... I want a life that's challenging.. That keeps me alive.. 10 years down the line a bank po life becomes very peaceful and all but with a much much better salary, reputation and a sense of achievement than what cgl could offer.. Please do not fight.. U liked it good but if u did not ignore.. Writing it as a comment coz if I post it people will start fighting and that is what is called immaturity and this immature herd will always defend that living a peaceful life at the age of 25 is what everyone's dream and hence cgl is always the almighty and po is just a flake. Thanks for your patience.. Apologies for a little harsh tone."
No comments/criticism or your viewpoint on this front please.
Few advices
So For you the summary is here:
Quantitative Aptitude: 25 in 40 minutes
Reasoning: 20 in 30 minutes
GK: 30 in 10 minutes
English: 25 in 25 minutes
Computer: 15 in 5 minutes
And you have a 10 minutes margin for error with 115 sure shot marks in hand
I used to attempt current affairs in first 10 min followed by computers in next 5 min.
Then I attempted English and gave 30 min to it.
Then reasoning for another 30-40 min and once I was done going through all the questions in reasoning section, I gave all the left out time to quants and did my best to solve as many ques as possible.

Ques 2
Is coaching necessary ?
Well I took one. And I will not say that it was totally futile. If you need one go for it but if you take it, take it for the right reasons.
Advantages
- Healthy environment: That's the biggest advantage that I got from it. I used to go to my classes (Of no use. why ? ill answer shortly) and used to sit in their library.
- Regular Test series
- Healthy study group (Only if you really want one or else you'll find many just making groups to help out girls. I hope you know what I mean)
Disadvantages
- Stupid shortcuts they try to teach in class which always work in their modules but never ever in exam. Seriously, never try to do any question with shortcuts. Practice using the regular method and improve your speed therein.
- Unnecessary GK books and capsules ideas.
- Distracting rumours and negativity from not so serious candidates
I'll say if you find it difficult to sit at home and make a routine go for it. It will definitely add up to you somewhere but only if you want it to.

Ques 4
How to prepare current affairs ?
Just 3 RULES & No rocket science.
- Never ever try to guess this is important and that is not. Everything is important. EACH AND EVERY DETAIL.
Sharing another excerpt from one of my answer in Pagalguys LIC AAO thread :
" after going through the 5/6 day slots.. I realised that gk will be the game changer and most of the ques are from in between the lines.. Hence capsules or headliners won't be of much use.. So I adapted.. Got complete gktoday.in printed for Jan and Feb .. A total of 500 pages . read all of them during remaining days... Secured 25/30 in gk.. 1 wrong.. Now that's the ADAPTATION I was talking about in my previous reply.. Hope it helps someone.. :))"
- Follow www.gktoday.in and BankerAdda's daily gk updates and make online notes everyday. Read in between the lines and write everything that can be framed as a question. every minute detail.
- Revise every weekend. This one is the most important rule. Never leave GK on last 10 days or so. If you are doing that, you're just digging your own grave.
Last 3 months current affairs in detail are more than enough for any exam conducted through IBPS. 70% of the section will comprise of last 2 months out of which atleast 4 question are going to come out of last 10 days.
2 from currency/ capital, 1 from national park, 1 from any stadium that was in news in current, 1 from power plant and 2 ques from PM/prez or ministers in news during last few months. 1 or 2 from important days from current month plus minus 2. ( if exam is in July then may June July Aug Sept) in detail and just very important ones from other months.. 3/4 from cabinet ministers, CM, governors and state capitals and various constitutional heads.
For banking related concepts, just ask the same on Pagalguy.com's ibps 2016 thread and you will get a lot of information on how to prepare that. For financial awareness also ask on Pagalguy and do financial awareness capsule of banker adda (just Google it)

Aim for 35/40 and you will get 30/40 for sure. Trust me its not difficult, it just sound like that.

Few advices
- Do no leave assumption and statement questions.. They are very easy to prepare if you do a diligent Google search for them. There are some very good articles on the topic on bakersadda, indiabix and gr8ambitions on the same.
http://www.indiabix.com/logical-reasoning/statement-and-assumption/
- Stop wasting your time sitting on Bankeradda or Pagalguy and replying to useless posts. Make use of them by being the silent reader
- Do follow pagalguy.com's thread of exam that you are preparing for. It helps you be in touch with other participants and if followed judiciously you get to know a lot about the exam and get in depth knowledge regarding different aspects of that particular job. (Just Google ibps 2016 Pagalguy)
- Follow bakersadda.com everyday and solve all their quiz (new as well as old) and read all their posts on daily basis. Do not get indulge on their comment sections.. if you have any doubts, use Pagalguy to clarify them.
- If you are one of those who just crossed 90+ and asking your chances again and again. STOP DOING IT. First analyse how to convert that 90+ to 100+ and then work on it. You cannot do anything about your performance now but you can improve yourself for other exams so that you need not ask the same question again.
- Done with RS Aggarwal, Go for Arun Sharma Level 1. It's a beautiful book to prepare for po level quants.
- Stop flirting on online platforms. Most of them are fake anyways.
- And most important: YOU ARE HERE TO CLEAR AN EXAM AND MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT. YOU ARE HERE NOT TO MAKE FRIENDS, GET LIKES OR EARN KARMAS. -- SO FOCUS.
